Chip Thomas: Musician. Mentor. Activist.

Chip Thomas
Board Member and Mentor, Stoked

In Good Health

Like the rhythm of sound, the movement in sports can connect you back to yourself in a way that empowers and inspires. When he’s not writing music, Chip Thomas helps at-risk youth write new beginnings for themselves through group activities at his nonprofit, Stoked. There, he “tries to close the opportunity gap for youth in our cities. Through sports and mentoring, we provide underserved communities a needed leg up in society. We currently have a 100% graduation rate for students who participate in Stoked for over a year.”

Supporting Growth

Apart from touring with artists like Casey Abrams and Postmodern Jukebox this summer, Thomas is “excited for the summer surf sessions with Stoked at Rockaway Beach.” “I remember my first summer with Stoked,” he says, “teaching kids how to swim. One girl in particular had never even been in the water. She [not only] passed her swim test, a few weeks later, [she] was surfing. She had this amazing smile. I felt incredibly happy for her.”

Moved by generations of greatness—particularly modern icons like Stevie Wonder and Barack Obama—Thomas looks to both the past and the future for inspiration. Much like the energetic confluence of the Modern Chain Collection, his unique philanthropy of bridges two worlds, creating memorable change that “can’t be measured through fame of the traditional success.”

It feels good to do things for other people, and sometimes that can even feel selfish. Whether you donate time, money, goods, services, it all feels good—and it all helps build community, which is the most important thing.
