Akilah King: Giver. Advisor. Advocate.

June 18, 2017

Akilah King,
Program Operations, Room To Grow NY

MY STORY:
In Good Health

A public health advocate passionately committed to bettering the lives of underserved women, children, and families, Akilah King lives to lift up communities. Her dedication to local needs began on the international scale, where she journeyed to West Africa in pursuit of helping provide orthopedic care to children. King’s Masters Degree in Public Health from Mount Sinai anchored her in New York City, where she now leads development and planning for Room To Grow, a nonprofit that provides hands-on support to newborns and families living in poverty.

MY SUMMER COMMITMENT:
Supporting Growth

King’s mission: “Doing what I can to raise health and mental health literacy and improve outcomes, especially for vulnerable populations.” This summer, she plans on helping “usher both Room to Grow and Operation Heal Our Heroes into the next phase of organizational growth.” It all begins with strategy—standardizing her programs and creating the best possible conditions for her teams to thrive.

MY STYLE:
Dynamic

Community is at the heart of King’s values. It’s “about coming together to support one another,” she says, channeling the dynamic bond of partnership, of past and future, and the dynamic momentum represented in the Modern Chain Collection. Forged in beautiful symmetry, one’s relationship to self and community is the driving force behind change. For King, it’s all about “knowing that I’m making a positive difference in the lives of others.”

I’m doing what I can to raise health and mental health literacy and improve outcomes, especially for vulnerable populations.
